BBQs, Fireworks & Business

July 4th's Legacy of Freedom & Entrepreneurship

Mark Kleinschmidt
President/CEO

Dear Members,

As we celebrate the 4th of July with backyard BBQs or head down to City Dock for the Parade and then stay for the fireworks, let’s take a moment to reflect on the profound significance of this day. It marks the gathering of 56 brave individuals in Philadelphia, 249 years ago, who signed the Declaration of Independence at Independence Hall.

A special “shoutout” goes to William Paca and Samuel Chase from Annapolis, who journeyed to Philadelphia and played a pivotal role in paving the way to independence.

Did you know that many signers of the Declaration were also small business owners? They pursued success through their own efforts and hard work, taking significant risks to secure freedom and build their business.

The Declaration of Independence not only signaled the birth of a new nation it also initiated a journey toward liberty, individual rights, and the pursuit of happiness which are the core principles upon which our democratic society is built. These principles were essential for fostering a thriving economy in a new nation.

Despite today’s chaos and political turmoil, much like the colonists endured under King George in 1776, the Declaration enshrined freedoms that allowed innovation, entrepreneurship, and hard work to flourish.

Consider how the Declaration of Independence continues to support small businesses today:

  1. Foundation of Liberty and Individual Rights: Emphasizing individual liberty and the pursuit of happiness fosters an environment that values entrepreneurship, innovation, and the freedom to explore diverse economic opportunities.

  2. Principle of Equality: While the understanding of equality continues to evolve, it underpins the idea of equal opportunity in business, promoting diversity and inclusion within companies.

  3. Government Skepticism and Regulation: The Declaration’s opposition to oppressive governance aligns with businesses advocating for favorable regulations and minimal government interference.

  4. Inspiration for Leadership: The courage and leadership displayed by the founders inspire small business owners today to take risks and lead their enterprises toward success.

Enjoy America’s birthday by celebrating and take the time to shop or dine at one of many great local restaurants or small businesses located in Anne Arundel County. I am sure your patronage would make William Pacca and Samuel Chase proud.

Moving Forward,
Mark
